Her father, singer-songwriter Marc Anthony Thompson, is a member of the musical ensemble Chocolate Genius, Inc. and is of Afro-Panamanian descent. Her mother’s family has lineage from both Mexico and Europe on her mother’s side. Zsela, who is her younger half-sister, is a singer as well as a songwriter.
Tessa Thompson went to Santa Monica High School, where she participated in student production of AMidsummer Night‘s Dream as the role of Hermia. She then continued her education at Santa Monica College (SMC), where she majored in cultural anthropology.
