Harrison began her judo training at the age of six when her mother, a black belt in the sport, introduced her to it. Harrison was born in Middletown, Ohio, in the United States. Middletown High School was her alma mater, and she graduated (Ohio).
She began her training under the tutelage of instructor Daniel Doyle, and by the time she was 15, she had already won two national championships. During that time period, Doyle sexually abused Harrison, who went on to report the incident to another judoka, who then alerted Harrison‘s mother about the incident.

In the sport of judo, Harrison participated in the 78 kg weight division. She triumphed in the World Judo Championships in 2010, the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016, and the Pan American Games in 2011 and 2015, winning gold in each competition.
